Every parent is with you as those anxious times emerge
I love my football and need a good dose of it every weekend.
However I felt sick to the stomach watching Collingwood vs Adelaide when an Adelaide player went down badly, looking seriously hurt, on Saturday night.
It made me think immediately how glad I was that our son no longer plays football, even after a promising stint at Oakleigh Chargers.
There has to be some balance (at least I would greatly appreciate if there were!) between sport and healthy activity and the risks that a sport might present. I can understand now how soccer has become more popular these days, which was really nowhere in sight when our children were growing up.
But Aussie rules is such a great game to watch, and no doubt play, like no other sport.
So where does that leave us with our kids? Sport is great, playing sport is even greater and supporting our kids to stay active is absolutely vital in their development as mentally and physically capable and happy human beings.
We take as many precautions as we can. Wearing a helmet, like wearing a seat belt, is a very good idea.
We never stop worrying about our kids however we must let them live and enjoy their sport of choice.
And never forget that every parent is with you as those anxious times keep emerging.
